Hello, my name is Debi Piccus. I am 47 years old, am married with 2 teenage children. I have been dieting for the past 18 years. I must have joined Weight Watchers at least a dozen times. In between I have tried the Atkins, 5-day Miracle, Susan Powter, South Beach and many other diets. Every time I begin a diet I have gusto. I cannot begin unless I have the mindset and time to obsess over food. Every Saturday morning I would ask my husband where we were going to go for dinner because I needed to plan everything else I was going to eat that day. I would end up starving myself all day and then inhaling the meal I had for dinner – all 2 ½ portions of it. Then I would plateau because I would be good all week, but blow it every weekend. I would hit a wall. I could not go any further. I could not put another bite-ful of “that food” into my mouth because I was eating food I did not like – salads, yogurt and frozen dinners. Then I would go on vacation for a week. I would decide to allow myself to eat whatever I wanted and then go back on the diet afterwards. During the vacation I would eat every single thing that satisfied me. I would only gain a few pounds. But then, I would not be able to get back on the diet. I had satisfied myself so much during that time that I could not get myself to begin depriving myself again. I had lost the gusto I began with and could not expend the mind power to begin again. So then I would gain all the weight back -- yo-yo-ing and destroying my metabolism. I knew I was doing it, but could not stop myself.
Then my employer, Duramax Marine, LLC, through ERC Health, decided to have Dee Wolk come into our lives. Her No Diet Weight Loss Solution is just that -- A solution. A solution that taught me how to satisfy myself every single time I put food into my mouth. What a change! No more anxiety about where I will go out to eat. In fact, I’m excited because I know that a restaurant meal will satisfy me and continue to satisfy me for 1 or 2 more meals. No more anxiety going grocery store shopping. Dee showed me how to listen to my body and respond accordingly. What I’ve found is that my body asks for good foods. When I crave something sweet it is my body telling me to have some mango, banana or strawberries. Not candy, donuts or cookies. I don’t have to try to control my cravings – it just happens. I have also taught my brain to understand when my stomach is at a neutral position – not too full and not too hungry. And so I no longer eat for any other reason but to satisfy my stomach. But what I eat every single time is satisfying. What a life!
Everyone gets stressed and feels emotional sometimes. Before Dee’s program I used to eat for every other reason in the book EXCEPT for when I was hungry. I now understand that my body isn’t ready to burn food until it is hungry and therefore I will wear everything I eat for every other reason. I also know now that food doesn’t solve any problem except my stomach being hungry and that is ALL it should be used for. So now I work on trying to find a solution to my problem or a reward for doing something good that does not involve food. Using the techniques that Dee has taught me, I now reward myself with self-absorbed behaviors that really do make me feel good. Not guilty or mad about doing something bad for my body.
So in the first 5 weeks of the program I have melted off 15 pounds and I know that this is what will solve my eating problems. I hope one day to become a facilitator for Dee’s program so that I can help people just like me turn their lives around – just like me.

“Starting in September 2008, I followed Dee’s program quite rigorously and I immediately experienced a vast improvement in the way I felt. I am a married 45 year old father of two who has been battling with obesity and yo-yo dieting for most of my life. After years of attempting, losing, and ultimately gaining more weight than when I started the latest diet of the day, I decided to give up dieting and suffer with the consequences that accompany obesity. This choice happened to come at a time when other people in my life were taking drastic and intrusive steps to lose excess weight. I was so desperate, in fact, that I came to the defeatist conclusion that I would inevitably gain enough weight to be a candidate for the surgical procedure which would result in what seemed to be the answer to my prayers; forced dieting. I have never been one to ‘diet’. I have never tried Weight Watchers, Adkins, South Beach, etc, instead I have always tried to eat ‘healthier’ and start exercising. A few years ago I was diagnosed as a ‘borderline diabetic’ which actually means you have Diabetes. I went to the obligatory diabetic education class to learn how to better handle food choices and understand the disease. I tried following the guidelines, counting carbs and sugars. I even started walking. My A1C, which is a test to determine how much sugar your body retains over a 3 month period, always hovered between 6.4 and 7 which meant I was unable to control the disease on my own. My doctor placed me on Metformin which was very upsetting to me.
When Wayne informed me of this program to be taught at the MSC, I was going more to support his desire for weight loss then for myself. Dee, you know I fought against this program for the first few weeks mainly because I was never a ‘dieter’ and I felt this program was geared strictly towards ‘dieters’. Man, was I wrong!!!
You taught us how to control our bodies and minds. Once I understood ‘body hunger’ and ‘portion distortion’ I saw my own eating habits change as well as my thoughts on food. I now only eat when I am truly ‘body hungry’ but still in control of that hunger, never letting it get the better of me. The ‘tricks’ you taught us really truly help! "I have been overweight all of my life. I was the embarrassed chubby girl in the spandex leotards and ballet costumes. I had ethnic grandmothers who were wonderful cooks and made their own bread, noodles, cakes, soups – yummy stuff, all from scratch. But I was initiated early on into the Clean Plate Club – after all, there were starving children somewhere in the world! (How were we gonna get the food to them?!?) I never learned how to trust my body, to listen to my body – and respond when it needed food because food was put on my plate – but not the portion size for a child.
So, I started with Weight Watchers in 1971 – and I can still recite their program for you. I found ways to cheat, but never lost much weight. Fast forward to about 1978 and the advent of the Atkins Diet. As a butcher’s daughter, I was in heaven – and I lost 30 pounds!! WOW!! But when I started to eat ‘normal’ food – even fruit -- the weight, plus more, came right back. I tried the Rice Diet, the South Beach Diet, and I tried Weight Watchers again, and again, and again . . . I even tried the hypnotism weight-loss plan offered by UH here at Main Campus.
So, was I resistant to ‘joining’ yet another venture?? You bet!! But I figured the $50+++ that I spent on weight loss books, weekly meetings, online Weight Watchers memberships --- so why not give it a try??
Yours is the first solution to address what and why I have eaten the way I did! You have taught me to listen to my God-given body and fuel it only when it needs fuel. (I love the analogy to filling a car’s gas tank every time I see a gas station!) What a simple concept – one that had never been addressed – but only given lip-service by other programs. You encouraged me to like, and now to love myself as I would, and do, my spouse, my child, my friends. I have finally realized that I have the right to take care of myself!
In this process of learning to eat only when I really need fuel, I have lost 10 pounds – in seven weeks!! I haven’t bought special meals, I haven’t counted carbs or points, I haven’t eaten anything that I didn’t truly want to eat. I have limited my wine to when I am hungry, and am better for it. My clothes are loose, and getting looser!!
But perhaps the best thing I have gained from these past seven weeks was the way I feel about myself. I walk straighter, and more confidently. I hold my head up higher. I know that I am finally doing something for me and all I need to have with me is the numbers in my head, and my soul listening to my body. This is truly something I can do for the rest of my life!!
I sincerely hope that University Hospitals rolls this program out at Main Campus, and eventually the suburban locations, so that your program can be shared with more people. It is truly life-changing and life-affirming!! It would be such an injustice if it is not offered again – on a broader scale!

Knowing that my “room full of gold” is always there keeps me from craving the unhealthy foods. I know that I can have whatever I want if I really want it.

"Sorry that I missed last week and unfortunately will be missing tomorrow as well. My granddaughter is visiting from Louisiana and I have not seen her in 3 yrs. She is 6 ½ yrs old so keeping me busy and I have taken some days off from work to take her places, last week we went to Zoo and tomorrow Waterworld with my sister and family. I know we were to get weighed tomorrow, can I weigh myself at home and let you know? Are we having any other classes after tomorrow? My scale and yours were the same when we weighed in, and I will be honest. I have enjoyed the class and listening to the tapes and do feel that I am learning some new ways of thinking. I had gastric bypass almost 9 years ago, starting weight was over 400 lbs and lost 160 lbs initially and have gained back 60 lbs but have kept 100 lbs off. Have been struggling past 4-5 years, working through divorce after 20 years, son joining the army and overseas/Iraq, now in Korea, moving from Baltimore, MD back to Ohio to be close to family 5 yrs ago and working from home up until last Aug. Exercise one of my biggest downfalls but also just got back into old habits. “By most external standards, I would be considered a success… and slender.
